Know where the effort is needed

How can we possibly focus on our priorities if we are not even clear on what they are?

This blog will take you through a little exercise to identify your priorities and how well you feel you are achieving them today. The answers will be different for everyone and remember this is just a snap shot to give you somewhere to start and reflect on. Once we have that information we can move forward!

#1 Draw this

#2 Identify your top 8 priorities

What aspects of your life are most important to you?

What do you want to spend your time doing if you could choose?

What are your motivations?

What gives you purpose?

Working through these questions you need to identify 8 priorities. If you don’t have enough, revisit each question and consider: What else? If you have too many consider why there are so many and then rank them from most important to you to less important and then select the top 8. This exercise can be done again for each of these priorities too. You can make this as general or specific as you need.

#3 Decide what 10/10 looks like

For each priority define what 10/10 looks like if you were meeting it perfectly. The more specific you are the better. For example if fitness was a priority, 10/10 could be described as running 10km in under 60minutes, 45 press ups in a minute and 60 sit-ups in a minute. It may be to run 5km or gain a certain weight on your strength programme.

#4 Assess how well you are achieving each priority out of 10 right now.

There is no right or wrong here. It should look something like this:

It will give you an image which can be quite striking of where you are achieving your priorities and where you may need to focus some more effort.

Congratulations you have taken the first step to becoming more focussed and evaluating where to put your efforts! The next blog will help you to analyse this and put a plan in place to help you move from where you are today to where you want to be!
