I just want to share a thought with you:
“Nurturing ourselves does not need to be complicated or complex, it just needs to be consistent”
~Dawn Rapp Piljek
Many of us are the nurturers in our lives. We nurture our families, our siblings, our parents, our friends and even strangers sometimes! It is within us to look after others and put them first.
Our culture has somehow developed to enable us to truly believe we should always put others first. I think it is important to consider others and nurture, but to never or rarely consider ourselves, well thats just dangerous for our health and then the health of the people we nurture.
It is so simple to say: “look after yourself first”, “put your oxygen mask on first” or “nurture yourself”. But in practice it is so much harder!
That is why I wanted to share Dawn’s thought. Sometimes we put off or avoid tasks if we feel we don’t have enough time, or feel too guilty spending so much time on ourselves. We somehow can feel that it would take a huge amount of effort and a 20 point plan to put something into place. My little mantra I like to apply to a variety of things because it works in so many situations and has so many health benefits is:
Something is better than nothing!
So simple but it works! Here are a few examples that take comparatively little time but reap rewards:
- I don’t have time to run 5 miles – I’ll do a 10 minute Barre class or HITT session. Downward dog allows you to amend the length of time for bespoke sessions whenever you use the app. Perfect for giving yourself something, a little nurture and you’re more likely to do it everyday and become consistent. Plus doing something is better than nothing, what if you never find the time for that run?
- I really should meditate but I feel like a failure when I can’t hold my concentration – Get an app that allows you to select the time like Headspace! Start with 3 minutes. Or even pause and take 2 deep breaths during your day. That is being present too! Consistently pause every day….. brings calm and focus into your life and quietens the fight or flight stress response, which if its always activated can lead to many health problems! Again this is a positive step in your health.
- I’d love a spa treatment – join one of my online zooms from the comfort of your sofa and PJ’s! Event details on dandelion skies facebook page.
Or when it comes to some indulgent beauty: Oh I would love a spa treatment or I really need to do something about my skincare. How can I do a little something for me? Find products that suit you, your values and fit your schedule. In summer my morning routine:
- I use calendula cleanser and citrus shower gel in the shower (No additional time), the essential oils impact my mood and wellbeing and the knowledge that they are organic makes me feel great as it aligns with my values. My routine is the same but what I use is different.
- I then use rehydrating rose toner but I’ve added a spray top so it is a quick sprintz without creating any waste with cotton wool.
- I always moisturise so I either use Geranium and Orange Body Scrub in the shower (great moisturising without half the beach sticking to my moisturiser) or Frankincense Toning Body Cream.
- For my face a small squirt of the Rehydrating Rose Moisture as its light!
I feel like I have really indulged, I’ve fed my skin, my mood, my values and feel nurtured all by changing a few products in the morning. Lovely!
So you can imagine in the evening for wonderful restful sleep how special I feel! A blog on my sleep ritual is coming soon!
